The Johnson Controls Battery Recycling Facility is a 440,000-square-foot lead battery recycling facility located on 270-acres in Florence, South Carolina. Utilizing the Design-Bid-Build delivery method, the project team at Carlisle Associates worked closely with the owner’s management team to coordinate the design of the facility by combining fast-track procurement and integration of process and material handling equipment to meet the demanding construction schedule. The project team used various strategies to implement green technology including daylighting, low VOC sealants and coatings, protection and restoration of wildlife habitat, and state-of-the-art indoor environment controls to provide a comfortable and productive indoor space for its occupants.
The multiarea building is constructed with a conventional steel and pre-cast structural system supporting an energy saving high albedo, single-ply membrane roof. There is also an innovative storm water management system that recycles storm water for use as process water and grey water for restrooms. The innovative processing facility was the first of such facility permitted in the United States in two decades.
